An online psychologist led support programme for Adults in Autistic Burnout who want to get calm, regulated, and supported enough to start living a more sustainable, authentic life

Run by Dr Alice Nicholls, an Autistic HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist specialising in Autistic Burnout

"I feel seen and heard in a way I never have before"

"I feel seen and heard in a way I never have before. I now realize that stress comes from areas in my life that I’ve never considered or recognized, and the strategies Alice suggests are hugely valuable. Signing up has been one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alice to anyone who is struggling with neurodiversity. It has made more difference to my life than I could have thought possible."

"Recovery from Autistic Burnout requires getting clear on your needs, advocating for them and making your life more sustainable... but before you can even start that process you need to be rested, regulated and supported"

If you've been stuck in the cycle of Autistic Burnout for a long time, getting a bit of energy back only to lose it all again- its likely you've heard lots of advice on what you should be doing or not doing to make yourself feel better.
The problem is that there is so much advice, and you don't know who to trust and you don't have the time or energy to put it into practice.
You might find yourself throwing yourself into another activity or approach that might help, or pushing through the fatigue until you find yourself back in deep burnout.
You might just be putting all your energy into surviving and then feeling ashamed you are not making progress with your recovery or the rest of your life.
Recovery from Autistic Burnout in the long term requires getting clear on your needs, advocating for them and making your life more sustainable but before you can even start that process you need to be rested, regulated and supported.

You can get clear on what you need, how to get it dismantle shame and internalised ablism and step into your authentic way of being in the world... you just can't do it all right now

If you relate to many of the below, I made Authenticity: Basecamp for you.
Do you...

  • Feel like you’re doing half of what you were doing pre-burnout but feeling twice as bad?
  • Know you have unmet needs but don’t know what they are, let alone how to meet them?
  • Feel drained after even brief interactions with delivery drivers?
  • Need extra time to work out what someone is saying to you despite hearing them fine?
  • Feel like your body is falling apart (literally or figuratively)?
  • Worry that you will never get out of burnout?
  • Feel grumpy with your family, even when they’ve done nothing wrong?
  • Wish everyone would just give you a break?
  • Dream of waking up feeling refreshed?
  • Feel guilty for not doing more or ‘trying harder’?

These are all classic signs you have been too stressed for too long

If "trying harder" was going to work it would have worked by now

All of this gets to change when you take steps to not only get more rested and regulated but to acknowledge and accept your needs as they are right now

What if you could treat yourself with the same level of compassion you show for other people?

How validating would it be to share your experiences with other Autistic people in Autistic Burnout and know you are not alone in finding life this hard?

Imagine being rested and regulated enough to think clearly about what you need in your life to make it more sustainable and enjoyable?

This is possible — and it’s what Authenticity: Basecamp was designed to help you achieve.

I’ve helped thousands of late-realised high-masking Autistic people break the cycle of Autistic Burnout and live more Authentic lives through my online courses and resources.

I noticed that lots of people in the early stages of recovery didn’t feel ready for a detailed online course.

What they needed right now was to feel more:

  1. Rested
  2. Regulated
  3. Supported

If this is what you need right now then I created Authenticity: Basecamp for you.

"Helped me to understand myself far better than I expected"
"Highly recommended for all with or without ASD diagnosis. This program came just in time last year when I had bad ASD burnout and I was off sick from work many times and twice off work for a long period. This program has helped me to understand myself far better than I expected—where I am struggling, why I am struggling, what's triggering me, what I should do, and how to manage my symptoms."

"100% worth it"
"Thank you for the exceptionally ‘spot-on’ content and approach so far. If this is the most valuable learning I get from this course, then it’ll be 100% worth it."

"12/10 Recommend"
"I started my journey by learning I was autistic. I discovered the existence of autistic burnout on my own and very little, if any, info on recovery. And then I found Alice. She’s taught me how to understand how I got here, how to cope with being here, and most importantly, how to advocate for myself and my needs in a world that expects constant productivity and endless demands. She’s so warm and validating while having insight that helps me recognize where my perspective isn’t helpful. 12/10 recommend Alice."

I’m Doctor Alice Nicholls, I am a late-diagnosed recovering-high-masking , HCPC registered Autistic Clinical Psychologist specialising in Autistic Burnout. It’s my mission to create a safe, neuro-affirmative haven for Autistic people to be their authentic selves, understand their needs, develop self-compassion and connect with what’s really important to them. I have been working with Autistic adults for over 20 years. I provide online resources to the Autistic Community, have over 10,000 people on my mailing list, occasionally speak at conferences and have been featured in Vogue and The Guardian. I live in Kent, U.K. with my three neurodivergent children and I enjoy crotchet, keeping pet rats, karate and yoga.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m in the US/ Canada/ Australia / a different time zone, will I still be able to take part?

Yes – this support programme will mainly consist of asynchronous discussions and conversations,  with discussion threads running for several days at a time.  Any (brief) lessons will be pre-recorded for you to access whenever suits you.

The only ‘live’ events will be office hours which will run twice a week (three weeks a month) in order to make these as accessible as possible I will hold one earlier in the day at around 8 or 9am UK time and one later in the day at around 1 or 2pm UK time.  These times have worked well in the Authenticity: The Course and Community for people to access around the globe, however, if there is sufficient demand for other times I will consider adding other times too.

How much time do I need to commit to Authenticity: Basecamp to really feel the benefit?

I would suggest logging into Basecamp for about 15 minutes twice a week would be a really good minimum aim.  There will be posts and conversations to partake in four days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) and office hours twice a week (3 weeks a month) , so you could, in theory spend up to an hour, 4 days a week in there if you had the time and energy, but this is not an expectation.

Can my under 18 year old join up?

No, I’m sorry this community is for adults and I am not able to monitor the conversations closely enough to ensure the safety of a minor.  If you would like to join Basecamp for yourself then you are welcome to share the resources with your young person and use the discussion points in your conversations with them.

I have FND/ ME/ CFS / EDS  will Authenticity: Basecamp help with this?

Authenticity: Basecamp is designed to help Autistic people get calmer, feel more supported and get more clarity on what they need to live more authentic, sustainable lives.  So if you have a co-occurring health condition which is affected by your stress and/or energy levels it may well help with those or help you identify what you need to help with those too.

I am easily overwhelmed by notifications and online courses, will it be too much?

You can choose whether to access Basecamp on your phone via the circle app or on your computer.  If you use your phone you may want to change the settings to stop notifications, or to only notify you of certain events (e.g. someone commenting on your post rather than when any new post is made). There will be a video showing you how to do this when the resources go live on the 21st of April

I have deliberately kept the lessons brief, optional and nested under a tab so you can choose not to look at them if you prefer.

Is there any accountability for people who want to work through the resources but will forget or won’t get round to it unless there is a deadline?

There will be a weekly optional accountability thread where you will get the opportunity to set goals which I will follow up on with you the following week.  This is entirely optional but if you opt in then I will follow up with you.

You are also able to use the office hours as co-working sessions, if you want to come online and set goals with me for that hour you are welcome to do so.

You are also able to download the mobile app for circle and set your push notifications so that you get prompted by your phone when a new post is made if this is helpful to remind you.

How many people are you expecting to join?

This is hard to anticipate.  I currently have 14 people signed up for Basecamp when it starts in April.  I have found the community of 40 in Authenticity to be a sensible size for varied discussions and perspectives without becoming overwhelming for the other participants.  However if the number of people began to feel overwhelming for participants I would create smaller groups within the circle community.

Am I too Burnt out for Authenticity: Basecamp?

I have designed Authenticity Basecamp to be a supportive and encouraging community for people who do not have enough energy for an online course.  It is low demand and the resources will be kept brief and accessible.  That said, if you are in the very acute stage of Autistic Burnout, are in the middle of a physical or mental health crisis that you have not found the energy to start addressing and/or you find the idea of logging into an online community overwhelming, you may still need to recover a little more before you join.

How do I decide between Authenticity: Basecamp and Authenticity: The Course and Community?

Authenticity: Basecamp was designed to help people who are not yet ready for Authenticity: The course and community.  It does not contain any content that is not present (and in more detail) in Authenticity.  So if you are looking for a deep dive into what you need and how to get it and are ready to commit to a 12 module course and community Authenticity would be more appropriate.  However, if you are struggling to survive and want support to rest, regulate and get clearer on the next step in your recovery journey then I built basecamp for you!

If you are not sure whether you can manage the content inside Authenticity: The Course and Community then I would advise you to sign up for my free course.  The format of the free course is the same as that inside Authenticity: The Course and Community, so if you feel able to manage that you will know that you could manage the content inside Authenticity:  The Course and Community.

When does it actually start?

Authenticity: Basecamp will start on the 21st of April 2025
